In Ethiopia, home gardens are a remarkable expression of the multiplicity of the country's local and rural cultures. They represent an exceptional natural and cultural heritage in terms of wealth and diversity.
Some of these gardens consist of neatly aligned beds, protected by geometrically shaped hedges; others merge into the environing landscape and forests, or form concentric curves around houses. But their essential function is to constitute a harmonious assemblage of trees, plants and constructions that provide local crops with the proper light, soil and humidity conditions.
The gardens of Ethiopia, around which revolves the peasant's daily life, display a wide range of products, vegetables, tubers, aromatics, spices, perfume plants – which are grown for the population's daily consumption as well as for marketing. Each region in the country is proud of its horticultural specialties, whose reputation of excellence has travelled way beyond their native soil.
